Diamonds Produced in Canada
According to the "Canadian Diamond Code of Conduct", a Canadian diamond is a diamond that was mined in Canada and may be cut and polished in Canada or abroad. So why buy a Canadian diamond? One reason is to be assured that your diamond is not a conflict diamond. (Conflict diamonds are diamonds that originate from areas controlled by rebel military forces. They use these diamonds to finance war and bloodsheds, against their internationally recognized governments.)
Another important aspect of Canadian Diamonds is that they are all traceable to their source mines in Canada. Having a solid sense of where a diamond comes from makes it that much more genuine and unique, for some people. A higher level of trust is established. Also, diamonds mined in Canada are usually bigger and higher quality than the average stone on the market. However, the reputation of Canadian diamonds also means that they carry a higher price, around 10 to 15% more, given the same 4C specifications.
Most of the diamonds that claim to be Canadian would have a Certificate of Authenticity certifying its origin. Just remember that this is not the only certificate that you need to see. More importantly you will need to check the diamond’s certificate from a reputable and independent lab like GIA, AGS, etc. For many Canadian diamonds, GemScan is also a common certificate, but it doesn’t carry the same level of reputation as a GIA or AGS certificate.
